Bubble Retrospective: Where Greenspan Lost It

Part of guaging how much trouble the U.S. economy currently faces is easily a function of understanding how it is we got here in the first place. Was the Tech Wreck bubble of early 2000 to mid-2001 unavoidable -- just something that happened -- or did the Fed play an active hand in creating it? Does the Fed really know what it is doing now, and where the economy is headed during the coming months and years?

Or has Greenspan lost his magic touch, soon to head for the exit doors?

We recently discussed these issues with Northern Trust chief economist Paul Kasriel in preparation for a longer interview of him to eventually appear in Financial Executive magazine. Subscribers are invited to click here to access some of Kasriel's ever-so-cogent thoughts and charts.

Within this article, we also tie those thoughts and charts into our own more technical and cyclical views, with emphasis on one tech stock yet to fall from grace, and one emerging Canadian gold stock that we are starting to look on with great favor.
